The European Union intends to upgrade their airspace management and make more efficient flight trajectories by updating the legal framework of the Single European Sky, Interfax-Kazakhstan writes. "Current proposal (European Commission - IF) to review the Single European Sky will not only help reduce emissions by 10% through trajectory management, but will also stimulate digital innovation by opening the data services market in this sector”, Adina Velyan stated, EU Transport Commissioner.
This proposal is regarding the sharp decline in air traffic caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and requires more sustainable management, its adaptation to demand, the EC declared. In 2019, flight delays cost the EU at 6 billion euros and lead to 11.6 million tonnes of additional CO2 emissions. The same situation happens when airlines choose long routes to avoid higher fare zones.
The Single European Sky Initiative was launched in 2004, aimed at reducing airspace fragmentation over Europe and improving the efficiency of air traffic management in terms of safety, capacity, cost-effectiveness and environmental protection. A revision was submitted in 2013 by European Commission, but negotiations between Council members have stalled since 2015. In 2019, a special group of 15 experts was created which has developed recommendations for the current update.
