The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Union have agreed to expand their cooperation aimed at strengthening global capacity in the field of civil aviation. The relevant decision was made during the eighth meeting of the Joint Committee under the Memorandum of Cooperation between the two organizations, held at ICAO headquarters in Montreal.
The new agreement provides for expanded cooperation in developing aviation capacity, providing technical assistance to States, and supporting the implementation of international civil aviation standards. The document became the fourth annex to the existing Memorandum of Cooperation between ICAO and the European Union and aims to improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of the global aviation system.
Particular attention within the partnership will be given to supporting developing countries. Joint projects will help strengthen the institutional and technical capacities of national aviation administrations and improve the implementation of international standards and recommended practices. This is expected to reduce existing differences in the level of aviation infrastructure development between countries.
ICAO representatives noted that strengthening cooperation with the European Union will expand opportunities to assist states and increase the level of safety in international air transport. The implementation of joint initiatives will become an important step toward creating a safer, more sustainable, and efficient global civil aviation system.
