FedEx Expands Use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

The American logistics company FedEx has begun using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at two additional major U.S. airports — Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport. As a result, in 2025 the company used blended SAF at five major airports across the United States. In total, the agreements secure supplies equivalent to 5 million gallons of neat sustainable aviation fuel.
According to FedEx Chief Sustainability Officer Karen Blanks Ellis, expanding the use of SAF is an important step for the company. She noted that introducing the fuel in FedEx operations in Dallas and New York completed a successful year of SAF deployment across the United States. At the same time, the company acknowledges that the aviation industry still needs to increase SAF production and continue developing sustainable aviation solutions.
Fuel deliveries are carried out under an agreement with fuel provider World Fuel Services. Under the contract, FedEx will receive 2 million gallons of neat SAF, delivered as a blend with conventional jet fuel with a minimum 30% SAF content.
Deliveries to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport began in December 2025. With this step, FedEx became the first airline—cargo or passenger—to begin purchasing SAF at DFW outside of pilot projects.
Despite growing demand from airlines, experts at the International Air Transport Association project that the global growth rate of SAF production may slow in 2026. Specialists note that achieving aviation’s climate goals will require expanding both demand and production of alternative fuels.
FedEx continues to implement environmental initiatives, including fleet modernization and fuel-efficiency programs. The company has already reduced aircraft emissions intensity by 30% compared with 2005 levels and aims to achieve a 40% reduction by 2034.
