AIRLINES TO RECEIVE FIRST CARBON OFFSET REQUIREMENTS UNDER ICAO CORSIA
Created on 13.02.2026 16:23
The governments of States participating in the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) global climate agreement, CORSIA, will shortly notify airlines of the first mandatory carbon offsetting requirements under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation. These requirements will be based on the new emissions growth calculation published by ICAO..jpg)
CORSIA aims to ensure carbon-neutral growth of international aviation and provides for the introduction of specific obligations for airlines. In 2024, ICAO calculated the growth of international aviation, enabling States to determine the volume of CO₂ emissions to be offset by each airline in accordance with the 1944 Convention on International Civil Aviation.
Transparency is a key element of CORSIA. Data on 99% of CO₂ emissions for 2024 were submitted to ICAO by 128 States, with additional emissions estimates conducted for ten more States. In total, data from 138 States were used to calculate the global growth of international civil aviation.
Information on emissions and calculations submitted through the CORSIA Central Registry (CCR) is published on ICAO’s official website, ensuring accountability and enabling the monitoring of the Scheme’s implementation progress.
In cooperation with its Member States, ICAO will continue to provide regulatory, technical, and methodological support for the effective implementation and further development of CORSIA.
