Adapting to a new reality of the post-pandemic market and the demand for new aircrafts, Airbus would reduce 15 thousand workplaces, representing 11% of the entire staffing table, according to the ATO portal.
“This crisis is the worst of all that has plagued the aviation industry,” Guillaume Fori, Airbus CEO, commented on a recent teleconference. He stated the company management has done everything in its power to mitigate the impact in the short term, and used a created delay to assess long-term consequences. According to him, the situation could have been significantly worse, but series of measures, including state support, unpaid leave, etc., saved the day and were taken in the first months of the crisis. Fori notes, 90 thousand people are working in the commercial aviation division and this segment has lost 40% of the business; while only 16% of jobs are reduced.
Predicting a next recovery eventually, Airbus would seek to maintain as many employees as possible, whose skills will be needed after 2022. Therefore, the part-time scheme, whereby the state and the EU will compensate for a significant part of salary, would remain at the manufacturer's arsenal. To ensure staff skills, it is intended to set up a rotation of experts.
