On May 15, the Lufthansa Group has announced that it had signed an agreement on carbon emission reductions and “solar fuel” implementation. The company has long been investing in the development of alternative fuels evolving to replace aviation kerosene. One obvious energy source is sunlight, according to Simple Flying.

In June 2019, ETH Zurich, Swiss Research University has reported on the innovative fuel development evolving to replace aviation kerosene. According to scientists from the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, they succeeded in turning “concentrated sunlight into hydrocarbon fuel,” which is widely used in the transport industry. The technology allows you to “capture” CO2 from the atmosphere, and then mix it with water and concentrated sunlight, also known as Concentrated Solar Power (CSP). The reaction produces synthesis gas, which can be converted into jet fuel. Lufthansa intends to use this technology to supply aircrafts with fuel.

Christina Ferster, member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, noted the need to utilize clean energy sources: “We once again emphasize the importance of "green" aviation fuel. Lufthansa Group of Companies has been working for many years to provide flights on climate-friendly conditions. Due to promising technologies and collaboration with innovative partners, we can report that we are on the right way. ”
