A new type of fraud has been recorded in Russia related to obtaining vouchers for canceled flights. On behalf of the air carriers, perpetrators have begun offering vouchers for further flights to customers, including withdrawals from personal bank cards. On May 13, the RBC news agency reported referring to the Card Service Department of VTB Bank.
Fraud is built along the following line: first, the passenger is called on behalf of the airline and offered to purchase a voucher instead of unused tickets. If a client refuses and demands to return the finances spent, he is offered on “expedited basis” to resolve this issue. Finally, the person is asked to send a data of his bank card and indicate the code from SMS to write off the agreed amount. As a result, all financial resources are lost from an account.
It should be noted, a passenger must contact an airline to receive a voucher, carriers do not ring customers. So far, this type of fraud has been recorded only among VTB customers. Other major banks have not yet reported on similar incidents. On May 12, a draft law had been adopted under which passengers will be given vouchers for the same amount instead of a refund, adding additional bonuses and discounts.
