A new Castelli International Airport has begun to be constructed near 40 kilometers from Heraklion. The new air harbor is designed to offload the current airport, experiencing an obvious overload during a peak tourist season. The air harbor will be located in place of a military aerodrome in Castelli village, according to the "Herald of ATOR".
According to the construction project, the new airport will have two runways in 3.2 km length, which meets all international standards. Simultaneously, it will be able to steer and park about 30 aircrafts on a platform. The airport will be able to accept enormous aircrafts, including the Airbus A380. The Castelli terminal will consist of five levels totaling of 72 thousand square meters, among them 13 thousand are intended for commercial use, and 1,100 are allocated for permanent exhibition area. The project price is 850 million euros. The final construction would be completed in 2025.
Crete authorities have announced at the construction ceremony, the air hub would become the best on the island. “The airport is being built in the heart of the Eastern Mediterranean”: a flight time from Crete to the capitals of Western Europe is 4 hours, to major cities of the Middle East and North Africa in even less time. Such transport accessibility would allow Crete to become a year-round destination,”said Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Greek Prime Minister.
