Airbus is considering an opportunity of introducing darkened windows to its aircrafts. Portholes will be equipped with an electronic control system, according to Simple Flying.
The global leading provider of electronically controlled windows (EDW) is Gentex company, which based in Michigan. It was the leadership of Gentex that announced that Airbus will introduce the latest generation of EDW in its aircrafts. It is noted, EDW has several advantages.
Firstly, the system allows passengers to darken a window and at the same time to see everything that happens outside. Secondly, EDW obviate the need for traditional window curtains, lightening the weight of the aircraft. Finally, the system has an embedded heat control function, blocking the penetration of infrared energy into the cab and reducing the need for air conditioning.
It should be noted, for the first time, such an EDW system was used on Boeing 787 Dreamliner airliners. Currently, it is the only model of aircraft, equipped with electronic shadowed portholes.
