The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called on leading global airlines to increase the gender diversity and to involve as many women as possible to aviation, according to Simple Flying. The initiative was called "25 by 2025".
This name hides the basic message of the idea - to increase the number of women in key positions at 25% in the aviation industry by 2025. Carsten Spohr, Lufthansa CEO, has led the initiative. He noted, that over the years, the German carrier has taken many steps to involve women to aviation. “But we also need decisive actions and modifications, which would enable the young women to become interested in aviation,” Carsten Spohr emphasized.
More than 30 airlines have supported the initiative, including major carriers such as airBaltic, Air France, Finnair, Hahn Air, Scandinavian Airlines and Swiss International Airlines. IATA representatives did not stand aside either - they also stated, they would contribute to achieving this goal and would try to create the most favorable environment to share best practices. Currently, women comprise approximately one-tenth of the total workforce in the global civil aviation industry.
