In Sweden, an airport without a control tower would appear near the ski resorts. Flight safety is planned to be provided using the sensors and video cameras, according to Lonely Planet.
The opening of the Nordic Mountains Airport (Sälen Trysil Airport) is scheduled for December 22, 2019. It is located about 25 minutes from the Selen, largest Swedish ski resort and 40 minutes from the slopes of the Norwegian Trysil. Sälen Trysil Airport will also be one of the first airports in the world, built without a control tower on its territory. Instead, a remote or “virtual” ATM system will be installed here, which is controlled by controllers of Sundsvall, located in 300 km from the new air harbor. Experts will be able to obtain all the necessary data for air traffic control and flight safety using dozens of cameras and special sensors.
Such objects without towers are becoming commonplace for small airports, not having the substantial traffic. In Norway, in the coming years, 15 airports are planning to close their towers and transfer operations to remote centers. In addition, tests of remote towers are already taking place at other European airports, as well as in the USA and Australia. London City Airport also plans to transfer most of their transactions to a hub, located 130 kilometers from it.
