On October 18, Qantas, the Australian airline, set a record for the longest non-stop flight. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner airliner has covered a distance of 16 thousand kilometers on the route New York - Sydney in 19 hours 16 minutes, according to CNN Travel.
During the flight, on aircraft board were 49 passengers, including crew members and four pilots. A record flight was carried out to figure out how passengers and crew would feel on extra-long flights. There were various experiments for health travelers assessing - from observing the melatonin level to modest physical exertion of passengers.
“This is a really important event for aviation. I hope this test flight will allow us to accelerate the people movement from one part of the globe to another. The research that we conducted should help us to organize prolonged flights”, said Alan Joyce, Qantas CEO. The airline has scheduled two research flights, which will be operated from London to Sydney in November and from New York to Sydney in December this year. Qantas hopes to launch direct flights from three cities on the east coast of Australia - Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane - to New York and London by 2022 or 2023.
