Delta Air Lines has begun using new biometric terminals equipped with face recognition software. According to the Los Angeles Times, the first samples of high-tech devices have installed at the Los Angeles airport. Technical devices with a passenger identification program, so far, have been installed near one gate in the international terminal. Further, the airline plans to equip such devices at 13 of the 21 at Los Angeles air terminal exits.
The biometric terminal is a device with a digital screen. Built-in cameras use face recognition technology for matching the travelers faces with images and names that were previously collected by customs and border services, as well as other government agencies. If the name indicated on the boarding pass corresponds to the received image from the cameras, the passenger is allowed to get on a board. The air carrier has protected the personal data of customers when using this service and stated that image matching occurs only at the scanning time and data is not stored in the system. At the same time, Delta Air Lines representatives note that, upon request of each passenger, instead of biometric scanning, he can pass the usual procedure of data verification.
According to the developers, the new technology can save about nine minutes when boarding an airplane or two seconds per passenger compared to the traditional type of boarding for a flight.
