The Star Alliance, a global airline alliance of 28 operators, led by German Lufthansa and US United Airlines, has signed an agreement with NEC Corporation, Japan’s IT and network technology integration services provider on "developing an identity platform based on biometric data," according to aviation portal Ato. ru.
After the system implementation, Star Alliance customers will be able to check in for a flight, as well as go to the waiting rooms and boarding without presenting documents and boarding passes. This will be possible due to the passenger introduction identification technology using biometric data. At the same time, NEC has clarified that "passengers have to present their passports during the inspection procedures and at passport control points."
The service will be available to customers who are registered in one of the alliance frequent flyer programs and have consented for using biometric data. Photos and other identification data will be kept on the platform in encrypted version, which helps to increase security. Star Alliance and NEC intend to introduce the first biometric solution at one of the Star Alliance airports by the first quarter of 2020.
