Turkish national carrier Turkish Airlines has registered a new subsidiary that will be used to turn its low-cost AnadoluJet division into a competitive low-cost carrier with a fleet of 200 aircraft.
Turkish plans to spin off AnadoluJet and as a first step created a 100% subsidiary called AJet Air Transport (AJet Hava Taşımacılığı Anonim Şirketi).
The new company was registered in mid-July with an initial capital of 450 million Turkish liras ($16.7 million). AnadoluJet will operate under the updated brand, the AnadoluJet name will be used internally as a kind of operating platform.
AnadoluJet was launched in 2008. The carrier is expected to get its own air operator license in 2024; it currently uses a Turkish Airlines certificate. This means that Turkish Airlines pilots fly Airbus A320neo, Boeing 737NG and 737MAX aircraft of both carriers.
AnadoluJet has grown to such a size that it needs its own agreements with handling companies, a new simpler ticketing system; it needs to become more profit-oriented in order to compete more effectively, especially with private Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines.
Turkish Airlines has ambitious plans for carrier AnadoluJet, which will operate 80 aircraft by the end of summer. In 10 years, the discounter's fleet will exceed the 200-aircraft, Turkish Airlines chairman Mr. Ahmet Bola recently said.
