Dronamics cargo drone operator is the first in the world who get IATA and ICAO codes

European cargo unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operator Dronamics claims to be the first carrier in this category to be assigned IATA and ICAO codes and is now preparing to launch commercial operations.

Dronamics got OY codes from the International Air Transport Association IATA and DXE from the International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO, as well as the call sign Black Swan (“Black Swan”).

The company believes that its activities are now recognized "on par" with international airlines.

The two-letter airline code from IATA will be used to designate the flight numbers. The ICAO code is used by pilots and air traffic controllers to plan flights, communicate with air traffic control, and disseminate important information through Notices to Pilots (NOTAM).

Last May, Dronamics became the first company who get the European Operator Certificate UAS (issued by the Transport Malta Civil Aviation Directorate), allowing to fly its own cargo drones. Dronamics was founded in 2014 in Sofia and based in London.

At the end of May, the company first took to the air its Black Swan cargo drone, which flew from Balchik Airport, located near Varna, on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. The UAV was remotely controlled by two civilian pilots from the company's ground station.

The Black Swan, which is 8m long with a span of 16m, has a payload capacity of 350kg. The drone is equipped with a Rotax 915 piston engine. According to the developer, it will have a range of 2,500 km and a speed of 200 km/h; the cost of transportation is two times less than the "normal" aviation.

Dronamics plans to start commercial shipping from the Mediterranean region, delivering parcels, medicines, spare parts and perishable products between the Greek islands and gradually expanding its operations to Western Europe and then to Central and Eastern Europe.
