Lufthansa has again become a fully private company: the German State Stabilization Fund WSF sold the remaining stake in the airline. The state assistance helped one of the largest European airlines in Europe to go through the crisis, maintain a competitive environment, and the state to make decent money on this.
During the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, WSF saved the national flagship from imminent bankruptcy by providing funding of around 6 billion euros. The fund bought a 20% stake in the airline for €360 million, which gave it the right to two seats on the airline's board of directors, and also participated in the investment of €5.7 billion without the right to influence the company's policy and provided loans. After capital market access was restored in October 2021, Lufthansa paid back government loans and investments.
