ICAO notes the importance of improving the search and rescue  system (SAR) in accordance with the standards of Annex 12 "Search and Rescue" to the Convention on International Civil Aviation and a number of other annexes, especially following the results of the investigation of aviation accidents such as the crash of Air France Flight 447 (AF447) in 2009 and the Malaysia Airlines 370 Flight incident in 2014.

As a result, ICAO has developed a number of standards and supporting documentation that are aimed at improving the effectiveness of search and rescue operations, including improving government oversight in this area, equipping aircraft with flight tracking systems and emergency beacons, and increasing interstate and regional cooperation in the field of SAR.

Representatives of the European Region, international organizations of ICAO, EUROCONTROL, COSPAS-SARSAT took part in the Search and Rescue Task Force-publishing of documents and convening meeting at the European and North Atlantic Bureau of ICAO.

The experts discussed various aspects of new ICAO initiatives in this area, demonstrated the successful experience of regional cooperation and SAR exercises in several countries.
