United Airlines has placed a $10 million deposit on a pre-order for 100 electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL; electric aero mobiles) manufactured by the American company Archer Aviation.
In February 2021, the companies entered into a cooperation agreement under which United Airlines placed a pre-order for $1 billion and an option for another $500 million. Thus, the airline can purchase up to 200 electric aero mobiles. The aircraft will be operated in the air taxi format by the regional operator Mesa Airlines, which is not owned by United Airlines, but has been cooperating with the airline for a long time.
This is the first case of real payment, which signals industry readiness to move towards eVTOL certification.
