The well-known British low-cost airline easyJet may follow an unprecedented path in the aviation industry by reducing the number of seats on its Airbus A319 aircraft, BBC writes. These measures are associated with the restoration of air operations in the post-pandemic period.
These aircrafts belong to the A320 family and equipped with two additional emergency exits. Additional exits are provided for evacuation within the limit time of 90 seconds established by safety standards. The same standards determine the number of flight attendants in the cabin, based on the number of seats. Since the A319 easyJet has 156 seats, the airline creates a crew of four flight attendants and two pilots. A reduction of flight attendants from four to three will reduce the number of seats up to 150, which could be crucial for flights in the summertime.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the British carrier was forced to cut staff owing to falling number of flights. After the lifting of quarantine restrictions in Europe, the demand for air travel has been returned to pre-crisis level. Currently, easyJet has faced a shortage of staff and urgently search for new crews.
