Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (ICAO code: CAN) has canceled more than a thousand flights since three employees were tested positive for the coronavirus. Due to tightening lockdowns, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) predicts a sharp drop in air traffic this coming weekend. Local authorities have begun mass testing of the population, numbering 5.6 million inhabitants.
Guangzhou Baiyun Airport is the base for China Southern Airlines and ranks among the highest airports by the number of scheduled flights and capacity. Currently, similar flights were cancelled at Shanghai and Beijing airports.
According to the CAAC, the passenger traffic will be decreased by 77% compared to the same period last year, up to 2 million passengers. The reduction relates to quarantine measures. The promising cargo segment also has been decreased by 9.5%, primarily due to extended lockdowns in Shanghai.
