Airbus sues Qatar Airways

Created on 28.03.2022 08:37

Airbus has applied to the UK Supreme Court requesting to effect reimbursement in the amount of $220 million from Qatar Airways. The crux of the problem is the airline's refusal to accept two Airbus A350 aircrafts under the current contract.

The lawsuit against Qatar Airways comes after Qatar Airways sued the manufacturer for $600 million due to the surface deterioration of the fuselage on twenty previously delivered A350s. In response to Qatar Airways' claims, Airbus unilaterally attempted to terminate the contract for the supply of 50 Airbus A321neos in January 2022. However, on February 18, 2022, a UK court ordered Airbus to pursue the implementation of the contract.

The scandal arose in November 2020 when Qatar Airways found out more than 900 surface defencies and numerous damages on the liner. The aircraft manufacturer had to admit that there was a problem in the quality of A350s, especially after five other carriers indicated similar defects. At the same time, Airbus accused the airline of "continuing misrepresentation of surface deterioration".
