Airports Council International (ACI Europe) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) urge to cancel all remaining coronavirus-related restrictions within the EU and the Schengen zone, citing that many European states have lifted domestic COVID-19 restrictions.
“Exactly two years ago, the WHO declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. During this time, we have received a lot of evidence that border restrictions are ineffective. Independent research and simulations released today indicate that governments are able to lift restrictions. Travel restrictions have proven to be an incorrect tool without affecting the transmission of the virus. The lifting of all COVID-19 restrictions will finally restore the freedom of movement as a priority. This is a necessary way for the entire travel and tourism industry that were forced to lose thousands of jobs during the pandemic,” Olivier Jankovec said, the CEO of ACI Europe.
The severity of COVID-19 is getting closer to seasonal flu. Therefore, ACI Europe and IATA have jointly sent letters to transport and health agencies of all EU Member States asking them to lift all travel restrictions in anticipation of the summer season within the Eurozone and allow vaccinated persons from third countries to enter the EU under the same conditions as Europeans.
