AirAsia intends to lease up to 100 VTOL aircrafts for ultra-short flights in Southeast Asia. Reportedly, VX4 eVOTL aircrafts will be operated that can accommodate a pilot and four passengers, Tengritravel.kz writes with reference to Travel Weekly.
Judging from the description, air taxis are designed for long-distance flights of about 160 kilometers. Aircrafts will be supplied by leasing company Avolon, which last summer placed an order for 500 aircrafts worth $2 billion. The program also includes Japan Airlines and Gol (South America).
Along with the launch of air taxis, Avolon intends to cooperate with AirAsia in order to "commercialize" zero-emission eVTOL aircrafts and develop an urban air mobility platform in Southeast Asia. The two companies will create a working group to conduct a local certification by exploring potential market opportunities and infrastructure requirements.
