Two U.S. airlines, Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines, have agreed to merge to create the largest ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC) in the Americas. Both airlines operate narrow-body Airbus aircraft and their combined fleet will grow to 500 aircraft over the next five years.
Rumors of a possible merger have been circulating for several years, based on numerous similarities in the business models of Frontier and Spirit. In particular, both airlines at different times were owned by Indigo Partners, a company that invests in ultra-low-cost carriers around the world. The company acquired Spirit in 2005 to accelerate the airline's transition to the ULCC model. But already in 2013, Indigo sold all of Spirit's assets and acquired Frontier - for the same purpose as Spirit had previously. Frontier's current president, Barry Biffle, was previously a longtime executive at Spirit.
