Towards improved aviation english training

A reliable communication line between pilot and traffic controller is one of the most crucial factors in flight safety. Communicative competence is one of the major competencies under professional controller training. The air traffic controller training includes not only general and aviation English, but mainly the radio traffic phraseology. Therefore, experts of the Professional Training Center decided to develop a new course “Radiotelephony Communication in case of Standard, Abnormal and Emergency Situations”.

This course is an ICAO Standardized Training Package (STP) developed under ICAO Trainair Plus Program, providing the necessary skills to ATM controllers, and most importantly, the phraseology used in standard, non-standard and emergency situations.

During the course drafting, the analysis revealed that the existing radio traffic phraseology course is developed for 12 hours, resulting in incomplete radio skills in implementing the emergency situations.

Despite the general language system, traffic controllers have several difficulties regarding the knowledge of existing documents and legislation on the radio communication procedure, along with the ability to transmit meteorological information, the use of inadequate or non-standard phraseology in typical situations. These deficiencies led to improved update related to radio traffic phraseology.

The course is conducted in English and involves numerous practical tasks, aimed at practicing the radio traffic skills in all the operational situations in accordance with the prescribed rules, thereby solving linguistic problems arising from rapidly changing and emergency situations.

Globally, the course developers intended to assist controllers in solving communication issues in order to increase the radio efficiency and reduce the number of accidents associated with communication deficiencies.

The course is validated by experts and is located in the ICAO library, so all the course participants will be certified by ICAO. The Professional Training Center is a leader and active member of the Trainair Plus ICAO Program, as well as the prominent developer of ICAO courses in the European and North Atlantic regions.
