The rescue helicopter operated for the first time on environmentally friendly aviation fuel, opening a new page in the development of global aviation. The H145 helicopter of the German non-profit rescue service ADAC Luftrettung has been fueled with the second-generation biofuel that can reduce carbon emissions by 90% compared to conventional jet fuel, according to news agency ATO.
The fuel was produced by Total Energies in France from processed edible oil without adding the virgin vegetable oils. Using this biofuel, ADAC Luftrettung intends to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 33%. The organization operates more than 50 thousand rescue flights annually, during which a total distance of 3.3 million km is covered. Thus, the use of environmentally friendly fuel would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 6 thousand tons.
ADAC Luftrettung has also signed a long-term clean fuel agreement that will increase the share of biofuels in the refueling process to 100% over the next years and use of a synthetic electric fuel called the PTL (Power-to-Liquid). PTL is a liquid fuel produced with renewable electricity that will enable the aviation industry in reducing its climate impact to zero.
