Dutch airline KLM intends to update outdated cabins on 14 medium-haul Boeing 737-800 aircrafts, representing the main type that the airline uses in operating flights across Europe, avianews reported.
The old seats will be replaced with new thin leather-covered seats. As a result, the poundage of the aircraft after completed modernization will be reduced by 700 kg, which enable the KLM to conserve 58 tons of kerosene per aircraft annually. The new seats will be equipped with USB ports through which it will be possible to charge mobile devices during flight. In addition, a special LED lighting will be installed in old Boeing 737-800s that changes a color depending on the stage of the flight, as well as new oversized compartments for hand luggage.
The aircrafts will also be equipped with satellites, allowing passengers to access the Internet during the flight via onboard Wi-Fi network. At the moment, KLM has not released tariffs for this service. It's only known that the first 30 minutes of Internet access will be free and might be used to exchange messages through popular messenger applications.
