Artificial intelligence inspects aircraft engines

Created on 27.05.2021 16:08

British low-cost carrier EasyJet is testing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to optimize borescopic engine inspections. The company has partnered with Dutch startup Aiir Innovations to test an automated borescopic inspection system that should reduce the time takes to perform and analyze these types of inspections on turbojet engines.

Aiir software uses artificial intelligence techniques to detect defects, count the number of blades examined, and quickly analyze their condition. Once the borescopic inspection is completed and the results are analyzed, they can be shared on Aiir's own online platform for others to view and comment on. According to the Dutch startup, its software provides full traceability to all inspections, which increases confidence in the condition of the engine and its market value for all parties to a lease or sale.

EasyJet is not the first airline to test Aiir technology. Since its launch in 2016, the startup has conducted research with the airline KLM and maintenance providers KLM E&M and MTU Maintenance. According to Aiir, those studies showed that the artificial intelligence technology reduced engine inspection time by about four hours and revealed 150 percent more important findings than human inspectors. In February, MTU Maintenance Lease Services renewed and expanded its partnership with Aiir for an additional 12 months.
