Director General of the ACI World (Airports Council International) Luis Felipe de Oliveira has urged national governments to provide direct support to airports and, most importantly, to adopt a coherent systematic approach in resuming flights, thereby enabling the industry to promote economic recovery, the news agency ATO writes.
The recovery of demand for air travel has been uneven in different regions of the world, in particular, Europe and Africa are suffering from the public inconsistency regarding the introduction of quarantine restrictions. The lack of a collective strategy related to the opening of borders is critical. According to the ACI, an uncoordinated action and tight domestic markets will lead Europe to the worst-hit region in absolute terms: in 2021, the damage is estimated at more than $ 37.5 billion compared to 2019.
In relative terms, the Middle East and Europe will be suffered the most: the financial industry indicators of these regions will be declined by 58.9% and 58.1% respectively. The Asia-Pacific region is comparatively less affected, but the local decline will be 40.3% compared to the standard figures.
