KLM has implemented a free internet access on their European flights after the airline has begun installing the necessary equipment on its medium-haul fleet from Boeing 737s. The antenna is currently installed on one aircraft, but new communication will be available on another seventeen Boeing 737s by the end of the year.
It should be noted, KLM will use only European satellites Viasat for data transmission. To access the Internet, passengers need to have a mobile device that supports the Wi-Fi technology. After joining a wireless network, a passenger can choose one from three access packages. The Messaging package is free, but is used for Facebook Messenger, WeChat or WhatsApp. If a passenger choose Surf or Stream packages, he get an access for sites and even streaming videos, however these apps are paid.
Currently, KLM allows to get an Internet access on long-haul flights, operating on Boeing 787 and Airbus A330 aircrafts. By the first quarter of 2022, the airline intends to complete the installation of antennas on the Boeing 777s. After that, the entire KLM long-distance fleet will have equipment, thereby allowing passengers to be online.
