Rolls-Royce has begun working on the first UltraFan engine, the largest aircraft engine in the world equipped with a 140-inch (3.56 m) fan diameter. The work is being carried out at DemoWorks in Derby, UK, and is planned to be completed by the end of this year. The main goal of the project is to create a potential new engine family that would provide a 25% improvement in fuel efficiency, according to the news agency ATO.
The UltraFan's efficiency is intended to sustain the aviation industry during the transition to renewable fuels that are likely to be more expensive than kerosene in the short term. However, the company intends to conduct the first test of its engine on 100% renewable fuel.
The UltraFan program is part of a broader Rolls-Royce development called the IntelligentEngine. For example, each fan blade has a digital "twin" that stores all test data, enabling engineers to accurately calculate all the characteristics of a part in current operation conditions, as well as controlling measurements of 10 thousand parameters by registering smallest vibrations at speed up to 200 thousand polls per second.
