UNWTO: international tourism will be in crisis

According to UNWTO study, international tourism arrivals have fallen by 87% in January compared to the same month last year due to ongoing and even tightened travel restrictions, thereby preventing the industry to overcome the crisis, Interfax writes.
"Following the severe crisis of 2020, international tourism is failing to overcome the crisis even in 2021since several countries have again tightened travel restrictions due to new outbreaks of the virus. Tests, quarantines and, moreover, border closures are hampering the industry's recovery from the crisis. Vaccination is progressing more slowly than expected previously which also undermines the recovery of international travel", the message says.
UNWTO has developed two scenarios for tourism recovery. The first one promises the start of travel in July whereby international arrivals by the end of the year will grow by 65% compared to the historical minimum of 2020, but will be 55% lower than in 2019. Another pessimistic scenario provides a tourism recovery in September, leading to a 30% arrival growth compared to last year whereby the fall would amount to 67% by 2019.
