Ethiopian national carrier Ethiopian Airlines is introducing the Trusted Travel Pass, a pan-African platform for verifying passengers' health status related to COVID-19. The initiative aims at improving the screening procedures when traveling within the continent, according to the news agency ATO.
The development of the Trusted Travel Pass was initiated by the African Union (representing 55 member states) in collaboration with the African Control Disease Center (Africa CDC). The platform was launched in October 2020 and has been tested in Kenya since January. Passengers are able to independently enter data on the results or vaccinations, which are validated as genuine.
Director of Information Gethinet Tadesse believes the Trusted Travel Pass will play a key role in market recovery after the crisis. Trusted Travel is an autonomous program and not affiliated with the IATA's Travel Pass initiative.
