US passenger airlines have returned to full-time employment approximately 26,000 employees after Congress's decision to extend the Payroll Compensation Program in December 2020, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
The program, is being a part of the CARES aviation crisis support initiative, has been originally adopted in March 2020 and operated until October 1. After the expiration of the term, airlines were forced to leave tens of thousands of employees without workplaces and who subsequently were returned due to the program's extension. The US government allocated 15 billion dollars for this program. By mid-December, approximately 13 thousand employees had returned to their jobs.
On March 10, the US Congress once again has extended the program until October 1, 2021. In return, companies undertake to refrain from layoffs and salary cuts during the program. Besides, restrictions on share buybacks, dividends, and management bonuses will be imposed. In 2020, American passenger carriers have received $ 40 billion in salary funds. Support was also provided to commercial airports: $ 12 billion in two tranches in 2020 and $ 8 billion in 2021. General aviation airports have been assisted for their needs $ 100 million.
