The number of passengers served by the airport has fallen to 25.9 million passengers or by 70% compared to last year, according to the airport's data. At the same time, before the impact of the pandemic on the tourism industry in the first quarter of 2020 the figure was amounted to 17.8 million, Interfax reports.

Last year, passenger traffic at Dubai Airport has exceeded the results achieved by London Heathrow, where passenger traffic fell by 73% to 22.1 million. Frankfurt Airport, one of Heathrow's main competitors, indicated the passenger traffic has fallen to 81% last month. While the authorities of most states kept borders closed during last year, Dubai has opened its borders in July. Average passenger traffic reached 1.3 million passengers in the third and fourth quarters.

Opening borders is crucially important for Dubai International Airport because it depends on transit passengers. Dubai Airport currently operates 142 destinations and 56 airlines, comprising over three quarters of the air carriers carrying out flights from Dubai before the pandemic.
