American Airlines has warned employees about layoffs

The largest US airline American Airlines Group Inc. has warned 13,000 employees that they could be sent on unpaid leave over the next few weeks amid the continuing negative impact of the coronavirus pandemic in the aviation industry, Interfax-Kazakhstan writes.

“Decisions related to reductions will enter into force on April 1 or later when the government's aid program expires. The vaccination process is not proceeding as quickly as we expected and new restrictions on international tourism under which passengers must present a negative COVID-19 test are undermining demand”, the company stated.

The airline reported of its intention to cooperate with trade unions in order to mitigate the impact on workplaces as soon as possible. Unions urge the Congress to prolong the public assistance until September 30. Meanwhile, American Airlines shares lost 38.5% over the past 12 months.
