In 2020, the passenger airline traffic in the Asia-Pacific region amounted to 18% of the 2019 level, leading to an unprecedented traffic decrease in the history of commercial aviation, as reported by the news agency ATO.
According to the AAPA's recent report, around 40 airlines consisting in the organization carried out 69.5 million passengers. Passenger turnover decreased by 80.6%, the average load factor decreased from 80.9% to 60.7%. In addition, region airlines operate more than a third of the global total cargo, including medical supplies, vaccines, personal protective equipment and medical supplies. Cargo hubs in Hong Kong and Singapore have assumed responsibilities for organizing the logistics of shipments containing COVID-19 vaccine in their regions.
Despite a number of optimistic examples, the overall recovery of the region air industry is undergoing multiple setbacks. Local markets have suffered directly from the second wave of disease in Malaysia and China. Vietnam has also announced new outbreaks after months of freedom from the coronavirus.
