In the crisis year of 2020, Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport had served approximately 19.78 million passengers, which is 60.4% less than the previous year. The number of takeoff and landing operations has decreased by half, to 186.4 thousand. Results could have been even worse if the air company Russia would not have made the transition  from Vnukovo, which was completed by the beginning of summer.

The significant reduction in passenger traffic and the decline in cargo turnover at the largest Russian airport last year stem from global aviation restrictions.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the passenger traffic on international airlines was especially suffered due to the practically closed borders, decreasing by 76.0% to 6.38 million people. Domestic airlines served 13.4 million passengers, a decrease of 42.5% compared to last year. The most popular international destinations by the end of the year: Antalya, Istanbul, Yerevan, Phuket and Bangkok; and federal destinations: Sochi, Simferopol, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar and Yekaterinburg.

Despite the restrictions associated with the pandemic, Sheremetyevo Airport has managed to put into operation a number of new infrastructure facilities.  Early last year was marked by the operating of the international terminal C ( 20 million passengers per year), which was integrated into a single facility with Terminal B, by providing connections within the single terminal facility for transfer passengers.

Unfortunately, the increased terminal capacities turned out to be unclaimed during the pandemic period owing to the development of the aerodrome infrastructure. On December 24, the first runway was commissioned after reconstruction completed, thus increasing the capacity of the Sheremetyevo facility to 110 million passengers annually.

Other facilities introduced in 2020: the Terminal C's apron for 19 aircraft parking spaces, the Moscow Cargo business center, a hangar for Aeroflot Group aircrafts (leased to A-Technics ).

In cooperation with government agencies, Sheremetyevo has developed and implemented a set of preventive measures to protect the health of passengers and airport stuff. In July, Sheremetyevo jointly with RDIF have launched a medical express testing for COVID-19 due to the resumption and gradual restoration of regular international flights.
