The international airline alliance Star Alliance and IT-provider Amadeus have launched a joint project to reduce the number of passenger contacts during travel. In general, the pandemic has increased the demand for contactless technologies, in particular, as part of initiatives aimed at restoring confidence in air travel, the news agency ATO writes.

The new project allows passengers who have already registered in the Star Alliance Biometrics or Amadeus Traveler ID programs to use the airport services with electronic identification. Launched in November, the Star Alliance Biometrics program allows passengers to pass an airport points, such as check-in, baggage drop-off and boarding gates using an identification system based on facial recognition technologies. Amadeus' Traveler ID solution, in turn, provides the exchange of a passenger digital ID with passenger traffic control devices. Thus, product integration will allow travelers to use Traveler ID at airports where Star Alliance Biometrics has been or will be deployed.

“The travel industry has been working on biometrics for several years, but having separate solutions from different providers have resulted in user's check-in in multiple systems. Meanwhile, the joint project accelerate the airport procedures, which means immediate improvement for those already registered in our program," said Christian Draeger, Vice President for Passenger Services, Star Alliance, including 26 airlines, such as Air Canada, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, TAP Air Portugal and United Airlines.
