According to the latest figures from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), US airlines laid off 37,000 employees in a month after the COVID-19 crisis government support program that compensated payroll (PSP) expired on October 1, AVIATION WEEK writes.
Since October 2019, the number of full-time employees in US airlines has dropped by 86,000, or approximately by 19%. In addition to employees sent on forced leave, this figure includes tens of thousands of people who have agreed to early retirement, voluntary layoffs and part-time shifts. There are only 368,000 full-time US air transport employees, and this is the lowest rate since 1990.
Since the end of the support program, the largest job losses (32 thousand) took place in network airlines such as American Airlines and United Airlines, which is almost 13% of their overall number. In contrast, the US low-cost carriers have reduced under 5 thousand workplaces (6.5%). Airlines and trade unions have been lobbying the US Congress since summer for a second round of payroll support, but so far to no avail.
