A group of experts conducted a new study which revealed that the airline market may lose more than a third of the pre-crisis volume of business trips.
Consulting agency IdeaWorks took a non-standard approach: the entire volume of business traffic was divided into seven categories and then, based on data from various sources, experts were able to determine the share of each category in the total volume. Further, analysts considered how each category would use the digital technology as a travel substitute, and calculated what percentage of demand would not operate. The study revealed that at least 19% from the pre-crisis level was lost for the aviation market and under the pessimistic scenario this indicator was dropping to 36%.
The most vulnerable category was the internal business trip category, in particular for holding internal meetings, this is about 20% of total business traffic. The study authors estimate that this category will be declined by 40-60% in the future, as corporations are seeking to use technologies introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
